DETERMINATION OF LUMP AND FINES RATIO OF THE IRON ORE, MANGANESE ORE, CHROME ORE & OTHER METALLIC AND NON METALLIC ORES, FLUXES CORE SAMPLES

Case Study of IRON Ore

As per the recent development on the Planning and Development of Mining of Iron ore with respect to end use of the mineral, it is obvious to establish the Lump and Fines ratio in the assessment of the mineral resource from the exploration core drilling data. The fractions +10mm are considered as the Lump portion of the resource and -10mm fraction is considered as the Fines portion of the resource.

Iron ore is of different types observed in hand specimen as well as drill core samples of an iron ore deposit in Jharkhand and Odisha, which are as follows:

  1. Hard Laminated
  2. Hard Massive
  3. Soft Lamiated/ Buiscuity
  4. Powdery
  5. Friable
  6. Blue Dust
  7. Lateritic

For Sl no 1 & 2 types, the drill cores recovered as Cylindrical Hard Core, and for Sl No 3, it would be a mixture of Cylindrical Core, Fragmented Lumps, Chips, and Fines. For Sl No 7, also it would be a mixture of Cylindrical Core, Fragmented Lumps, Chips, and Fines. So for Sl No 1.2,3 and 7, the exact half of the Core Recovered to be taken out for Sampling Purpose, through Splitting of Hard Cylindrical Portion and others(fragmented lump, chips, etc.) through hammering. This Part of the samples to be crushed in the 1st stage to make -30/25mm through Jaw Crusher. Then the Samples to be screened through a GI Screen to separate + 10 mm and – 10mm fractions. Then % of the individual to be calculated with respect to the total sample for the determination of Lump ad Fines.

For Sl no 4 to 6, the drill core recovered in both Dry/Wet Core drilling are of chips, powder, and dust of various grain sizes. In this case, the half portion of the recovered drill core to be taken out for the Sampling process. This Sample to be screened with 10mm GI Screen to separate +10mm and -10 mm fractions. Then % of the individual to be calculated with respect to the total sample for the determination of Lump ad Fines.

The Sample process to be applied for all other Metallic, Nonmetallic Ore, and Fluxes.
